Vivid mode produces oversaturated colors that are unrealistic right out of the box, but most people will find that any of the other settings’ color accuracy is more than acceptable. Additionally, the menus provide all the choices required for a thorough calibration.
For my experiments, I used HDR Theatre for HDR content and Theatre Day for SDR content. To improve color accuracy, particularly for skin tones, I increased the Colour Temperature setting—to Medium for SDR and Mid-Low for HDR—and set Active Contrast to Medium to enhance shadow detail. I also disabled the Motion Enhancement setting, which adds the digital video effect—commonly known as the “soap opera” effect—that makes recorded footage appear to be live video while also smoothing motion through frame interpolation.
You might want to explore these features’ other settings as well. In my experiments, the Active Contrast setting on High added ringing around some objects in brighter situations, which you might find less annoying than I did, but it also enhanced shadow detail even more. Frame interpolation can also enhance the appearance of both live and recorded video. One of its options, termed Film, in my experiments marginally smoothed motion without adding any digital video effects.
As I previously indicated, I observed some rainbow artifacts. Even though I can easily see these, there weren’t many of them when I watched the majority of films and TV series. The only movie in our test set that included numerous gloomy moments with bright highlights was the one where I noticed them frequently enough to be unpleasant. Most people won’t think this is a problem. However, if you’re worried about rainbow artifacts, be sure to buy from a retailer that accepts simple returns so you can try the projector out for yourself.
